Giovanni di Stefano v Wikipedia

I am annoyed after reading in Private Eye that Wikipedia has removed controversial comments on Giovanni di Stefano' career such as his fraud conviction in 1986, to his failed attempts to buy various football clubs and doubts about whether he really is a lawyer at all. Giovanni di Stefano theatend to sue wikipedia if they failed to remove the offending pieces yet as this can pretty much be defended in a court of law I don’t really understand why wikipedia backed down and removed these items from their website.
